The London & Middlesex branch is pleased to invite you to join us on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 10 am for our monthly hybrid event, with professional genealogist and speaker, Carol Small, who will be joining us in person.
A bit about our Speaker:
Carol McIntosh Small was born in England, the daughter of a RCAF medic and a British war bride. She grew up in Bruce County, attended Stratford Teachers College, and pursued a career in education that encompassed teaching, administration
and a school board trustee. Since her retirement, Carol has been active serving her community. Today, she is past Chair and volunteers with the Middlesex Centre Archives. She chairs the Committee to Establish a Middlesex County Archives. Her interest in genealogy and history stems from the stories her paternal grandmother told her. The old family letters housed in her grandparents’ home always intrigued her and fueled her passion to learn more about her family …. not just their names but who they were! The large collection of family letters that dated from 1839 to 1971 with origins over several continents, were the basis for the written family history and a Master of Education project. They are a longitudinal history of migration. The stories these letters told could never be found in dusty records.
Synopsis:
Carol has written a 500-page family history and an addendum based on family letters from her grandparents’ farm house and built by her gt gt grandparents, Alexander and Barbara Gunn McIntosh. The letters span the years 1839 to 1971, 6 generations of the Sutherland, McIntosh and Gunn families, and 3 continents. The original focal area was Tongue, Sutherlandshire and Camster, Caithness in Scotland to all corners of the world. They give a longitudinal study of migration from Europe to Australia, New Zealand and North America and then the westward migration in Canada. Best of all, they give relationships of people, character and even gossip! The people had characters not just names and data. These treasures are now part of the family collection in the Bruce County Archives in Southampton, Ontario. They are a genealogist’s dream!
