The London & Middlesex branch is pleased to invite you to join us on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at 10 am for our monthly hybrid event, with speaker, Joanne Paterson, who will be joining us in person. Note: this highly anticipated presentation was rescheduled from March due to weather conditions.

A bit about our Presenter:

Joanne Paterson is currently the Head, Research & Scholarly Communication Team, Western Libraries at Western University. In that role, she works with a team of specialist librarians who support researcher activities throughout the researcher’s workflow, providing support with such things as data and data management, GIS and other mapping tools, Journal publishing, open education resource production, and more!  Prior to that, she was a metadata librarian with primary responsibility for Western Libraries open access Institutional Repository, Scholarship @Western. Before coming to Western, Joanne was a member of the Digital Office at Library and Archives Canada, where she learned something of archives and their collections, and worked with the preservation of websites, of theses, and other digital-first materials. She is keenly interested in genealogy and is working to apply what she has learned about the digital humanities to her own family history projects. She holds a BMus in Music History and Literature, a BA in General Humanities and an MA in Musicology from The University of Calgary, in addition to an MSc ILS from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland. She is also an amateur musician and she plays trumpet, flugelhorn, euphonium and sometimes even the alto horn, in a number of groups, including The Jazzabelles (an all-women jazz band), the Barclay Road Brassworks, the Swing Shift big band, and the London Concert Band.

Synopsis:

Searching in the archives can be very rewarding for the family historian. It can also be daunting and a little frustrating, and it needn’t be. With some planning, and armed with your research questions, you can find interesting titbits to enhance your family’s story. In this presentation, Joanne will demonstrate:

  • tips and tricks to navigate the collection
  • how to prepare for an onsite visit to the Reading Room of Western Archives
  • some collection highlights that may be of interest to the family historian

Registration is required for those planning to attend virtually. Attendance is free and open to all.
